The Formation of Rivers
We've been exploring the relationship between ancient civilizations and rivers. As part of this exploration, we created rivers in diatomaceous earth, using part of the Lawrence Hall of science unit River Cutters.

1. Today all of you will have a block class in which you will work on completing all the river work from last week. Most of you will have some still to do at home.
ALL RIVER WORK IS DUE THIS FRIDAY, SEPT. 28.
2. Make a poster advertising a river. We’ll talk about guidelines for choosing a river and creating the poster in block classes.

1. You will receive your literary logs today. You will write a letter to Tammy in response.

7th grade
1. Write a literary log letter to a partner (partners will be posted on Monday).

History
1. Complete the River Features Glossary packet. Read the directions carefully.
Due in second block this week.
Language Arts
6th grade
1. We’ll begin the Wordly Wise vocabulary program in class on Tuesday. You will be assigned activities from Unit 1, which will be due on Thursday.
7th grade
1. Wordly Wise unit 1 will be handed out on Wednesday and due the following Wednesday (9/26) for students in the second week of farm school. It will be due on Wednesday (10/3) for students in the first week of farm school.
2. Write 1 pantoum for homework. Due Friday, Sept. 21st.
8th grade
1. Read “Lost” in your poetry packet. Answer the questions. Due on Thursday, Sept. 20th.
2. Complete the poetry writing assignment below. Choose 3 of the following ideas for poems. You may use the pantoum form we used last year for one of the poems, but the other 2 should be free verse. No haikus, no rhyming. Go back and read the poems for inspiration.
“Proof” by Julia Alvarez
• Write a poem about a fantasy you have had about a place you have seen only in pictures or movies.
•
“Deer in the Bush” by Chana Bloch
• Write a poem about an animal you have observed in the wild or a pet at home. Try to express your feelings about the experience of observing another species in its environment, and whether the creature might—or might not—be aware of being observed.
•
• “White Panther” by Gene Frumkin
• Write a poem about a myth, spirit, or creature you believed in when you were younger (think tooth fairy, unicorns, etc.). Try to convey how you felt when you discovered the myth wasn’t true.
•
“Lost” by Naomi Shihab Nye
• Write a poem that is an advertisement flyer for a lost pet OR write a poem from a pet’s point of view about being lost.
Due on Thursday, Sept. 20th.
3. You will begin an essay assignment in class on Friday. It will be due on Thursday, 9/27 for week 2 farm school and on Thursday, 10/4, for week 1 farm school.

1. A Different Kind of Self Portrait
***Choose an animal or object that is important to you. From the teacher sample you can see that Elena chose a clarinet. Tammy’s will be shared in class.
***Draw your choice or make a collage. It should be fairly large (should fill most of an 81/2 by 11 inch piece of paper). Leave a blank spot for the photo of your head. We’ll begin in class, but you may need to complete it for homework.
***We’ll also begin poems to go with this “portrait”. You may need to finish this for homework as well.
