You MUST have gone to the public library by Wed (7th), Thurs. (6th).

2. We’ll check in on history report notes and sources on Wed. and then new reading for Shadow Spinner will be assigned.

8th grade

Synergy Eighth Graders and Horace Mann Eighth Graders

On Monday, April 20th, 8th graders from Horace Mann and Synergy met in the Horace Mann library to kick off a joint reading project of The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian by Sherman Alexie. Synergy parent and Horace Mann Librarian, Valerie Barth, showed a short film interview with Sherman Alexie. The students met each other and will now be blogging back and forth in discussion about this novel.

Keep this sheet and your requirement sheet in the front of your report folder or binder and check off each step as you complete it by writing the date of completion on the line.

VERY IMPORTANT: Be sure to have a San Francisco Public Library card by Wednesday, April 22nd (7th), Thursday, April 23rd (6th). Bring it to school daily from then on. We will be working on various research skills.

History Report Requirements (6th/7th graders)

HISTORY REPORT REQUIREMENTS

THE HISTORY FAIR IS ON WEDNESDAY, JUNE 3, 2009. ALL ELEMENTS ARE DUE ON MONDAY, JUNE 1ST. NO EXTENSIONS.

Writing: All computer written reports must use a standard font in a standard size, 1.5 line spacing and margins no larger than 1 inch. The requirements do not include the illustrations. It is, however, good to have some illustrations mixed in with the writing. Hand written report length requirements will vary depending on your writing.
6th grade – minimum of 5 pages of writing, not including the illustrations etc.
7th grade – minimum of 7 pages of writing – not including the illustrations etc.

3 DIMENSIONAL PROJECTS

The 3 dimensional project is another part of teaching people about your topic and drawing their interest to your display.

1. It may be art based, such as a sculpture, a scene, or a replica of an artifact from the period of time or place. There are many other ideas as well. Some examples include a sculpture of a person, a scene showing life in a particular place or time period, a replica of a shield, pottery or some other object that might have importance in your topic.

2. A demonstration of something: For example, someone studying an inventor might want to show how an invention works. Or, a person studying a writer might want to create books including that person’s writing and perhaps write something in the style of that writer. If you’re studying a religion, you might create a temple, statue, relics or something else important to that religion.

3. An interactive project: For example, create a game that teaches people about your topic. Think about the many kinds of displays you see in museums for ideas.

History
1. Complete the map on Paul’s journey. Due second block this week.
2. Complete pages 61 through 63 of World Religions: Christianity. Due second block this week.

3. Homework on the spread of Christianity and different denominations will be handed out in second block and due in first block next week.

4. You will have the final test on Christianity on Thursday, April 30th for grades 6 and 8 and on Friday, May 1st, for 7th grade. The study guide will be handed out next week.

Language Arts
6th grade
1. Final short stories are due on Tuesday, April 21st.

7th grade
1. Complete pages 17 through 22 in your skills book. Due on Wednesday, April 15th.
1a. Write a conversation between two inanimate objects (for example, a basketball and a hoop, a pencil and an eraser). Have the speaker in the middle of the sentence in some of the dialogue. Due on Friday, April 17th. We’ll begin this in class on Wed.

2. Test on Wordly wise unit 9 on Friday, April 17th.
3. You will receive your history report topic in class this Wednesday along with a first source to read, highlight and begin to take notes. The notes on the first source are due on Wednesday, April 22nd.


8th grade
1. We will meet with the 8th graders at Horace Mann at 8:15 am on Monday, April 20th. We will meet at Synergy promptly at 8 and walk over together.
2. Write 2 villanelles for homework. Due on Thursday, April 16th.
3. Check due dates for the 8th grade project. Remember, you owe a minimum of 3 hours of work by Friday.
Thursday, April 2nd Your introduction is due (NOTE: by now, your report should be at least 4 pages. If your first sections were short, make up the difference with this part, even if it means writing more sections)
April 3 – April 13th Spring Break (if you’ve kept up with due dates and requirements you should have very little work writing to do). Begin work on your visual component.
