Middle School Language Arts and Humanities Homework
Week of September 8, 2008

Humanities
1. Culture Boxes are due in first block class this week (Block III-Wed., Block II-Thurs., Block I-Fri.) An example will be shown in the first block classes. Be sure to include a thorough paragraph explaining the elements of your culture box to others who will see it (like you would find in a museum display) OR write a poem about your culture box.
YES, PROOFREADING IS ESSENTIAL.

2. Write a Where In the World question card (don’t write the answer, just the question). This is due in 2nd block this week.
We will practice this in class and instructions for how to navigate the web site are on the reverse.

3. Map work on Asia and India will be handed out in first block. This is due in 2nd block this week.

Language Arts
6th grade:
1. Write a literary log to me (Tammy) explaining what makes a “good “character in a book. How does the author create a character who’s believable, even if you don’t like this character? Use specific examples of both good and bad characters and what made them “good” or “bad.” Remember, it’s not a plot summary and it needs to be a full page.
Due on Thursday, September 11th.

7th grade:
1. Write a literary log to me (Elena) explaining what makes a “good “character in a book. How does the author create a character who’s believable, even if you don’t like this character? Use specific examples of both good and bad characters and what made them “good” or “bad.” Remember, it’s not a plot summary and it needs to be a full page.
Due on Friday, September 12th.

2. Complete the pantoum we began in class on Wed. Due Friday.
8th grade
1. Plan and write a 5-paragraph essay on what you hope this year will be like for you. Think about school (including trips like Farm School and Mexico), your search for high schools, and any things outside of school related to you and/or your family and friends.
In reading your summer essays, I noticed lots of good writing and still some problems with clear thesis statements. Your thesis statement is what you will prove to your readers in your essay. It needs to be explicit and clear. Due Friday, September 12th.

2. Poetry: we’ll be writing poetry for the first 3 weeks of school. First we’ll look at alliteration and assonance, using some samples. For homework, complete the questions assigned in class AND make a list of alliterations in your writing notebook. Due Thursday, September 11th.

Where In The World - - - -

To do this assignment, you can use the following resources:

Your school atlas or any other print atlas

www.factmonster.com - click on “world” and then on “World and News”

www.infoplease.com/world - this is the full almanac site and is more complex

You must write on the back of your questions or answers what source you used. Also, the answers need to include any appropriate further information, i.e. the depth of a sea, height of a mountain, magnitude of an earthquake, or specific location of a place

How to answer a question:

Go to either of the above sites or your atlas, if appropriate. Search using the key word in the question.

Example: Where did Mohandas Gandhi lead an independence movement?
Look up or enter Mohandas Gandhi and read the info.

How to write a question:

Go to the one of the above sites or your atlas.

Example: Go to Factmonster.com, click on “world”, and then click on
“World and News”
From here you can click on any area you want. “More” will always give you a full list of all the information in that category.

By clicking on “World Geography” you could then choose
“Geography Hall of Fame” If you wanted people to find “the largest sea”,
your question would be “What is the largest sea?”

The answer to this question needs to include the factual information – Example: The Mediterranean Sea. It is 1,144,800 square miles/
