Homework week of 9/3/08

Middle School Language Arts and Humanities Homework
Week of September 3, 2008

1. Design a book cover for your favorite summer book. You will be given paper for this assignment and we will show you a sample in class. DUE TOMORROW, Thursday, September 4, 2008.

• Draw your OWN cover; do not copy the actual book cover. This is a drawing assignment, not a computer graphics assignment. Use colored pencils or markers. The cover needs to reflect something about the book. For example, you could use the character(s), a scene, ideas from the book, themes or issues, emotions the book conveys, etc.

• Be sure to include the title and author (use capital letters appropriately. The first letter of each word in a title and in the author’s name is capitalized).

• As part of your cover, write 3 reasons people should read this book. This could be worked into your design or written at the bottom of the cover – single words or sentences.

2. Make your culture box (directions on the reverse). Don’t wait for the last minute---this is a big assignment. DUE IN SECOND BLOCK CLASS NEXT WEEK.
BLOCK I—Friday, Block II---Thursday, Block III—Wednesday.
Eighth graders, you have a choice. You may create a culture box OR you may do an assignment called an Autobiodoodle. This will be explained in class.

Making A Personal Culture Box Sept. 4, 2008

Many things contribute to your personal culture – your family, friends, interests. beliefs, ancestors, traditions, the place you live in and places where your family (including past generations) has lived.

This personal culture box will portray who you are through images, words, objects, colors, textures etc. that represent various aspects of you and your life. This is a box of your own design AND it is not a diorama.

Requirements: Size: no smaller than a shoe box and no larger that about 15 by 15 by 8 inches
Content: You must choose things from a minimum of 4 different categories listed below.

Media: This needs to be a mixed media project. It needs to include color, varied textures and three dimensional elements. You may use paper, paints, markers, computer generated material, objects etc.
You MUST use a variety - ie NOT all drawing or all computer images.

Writing: Write a paragraph or poem explainiing what your box shows about you and your personal culture.
