Character Writing Assignment

Character Writing Assignment DUE ON WED. FEB. 18TH

We brainstormed and took notes in class on aspects of a character. We divided these into categories:
Physical Characteristics
• Age, ethnicity, gender, hair color, hair style, height, eye shape, eye color, body type, ways a character moves, and so on…….
Personality Traits and/or ways s/he reveals personality
• Friendly, reserved, shy, outgoing, talkative, quiet, clothing styles, ways s/he relates to others, funny, serious, sense of humor, lack of sense of humor, lots of friends, fewer friends, a loner, always part of a group…
Likes/Dislikes/Interests
• Athletic/not interested in athletics, reader, not interested, (you can create quite a long list here----food tastes, free time interests, etc.)

The assignment:
1. You were assigned a secret person in your grade (don’t tell).
2. Create a scene in which you will write about your person. It could be at school, during lunch, in class, during a school dance or party etc.
3. Reveal as much as you can about your character through descriptions, while making it interesting and part of the scene. You may not use your character’s name, although you can use a fake name.
4. Write this in your writing notebook. It should be a MINIMUM of 1/2 page, 1.5 spaces and size 12 font if using the computer.

SAMPLE:
“Walking purposefully through the hall, Antonio chatted with a group of kids about the previous night’s Warriors’ game. He gestured freely with his arms, switching his pile of books back and forth, almost dropping them. Finally he reached his classroom, put down his lunch box, and turned on his computer, all the while joking around with students and his colleagues. “Hey Antonio, I like the haircut!” Elena called out as Antonio smiled and ran a hand across his short, dark brown, curly hair. “OOHH,” he suddenly said, “I hope I don’t have lunch duty today. I have to meet with the basketball teams about the playoffs.” “If you do, I can switch with you,” offered Tammy. “Wow, thanks!” Antonio gave Tammy a hug, dwarfing her small frame.
“I made a special dinner last night,” said Tiff, passing by in the hall. “Do you want some, Antonio?” “Ah, well, what’s in it exactly?” replied Antonio a trifle nervously. “Oh yeah, I forgot how picky you are,” laughed Tiffany. “I’ll let you check it out during lunch.” Students began entering the classroom and Antonio strode to the front of the room, perched on his stool, and began telling a story.
